چکیده

The determination of isocyanates concentrations in air is complicated by thepresence of these substances as monomers and oligomers as well as in thevapor and aerosol phases. Direct-reading instruments (DRIs) are available fordetermining the diisocyanate concentrations in workplace air, but they arecalibrated for the monomers only. Industry uses polymeric diisocyanateswhich contain monomers and oligomers. This study evaluated DRIs underlaboratory conditions for their use in determining the total concentration ofisocyanates monomers and oligomers that are contained in commercialpolymeric diphenylmethane diisocyanate (PMDI). Aerosols of differentcommercially available PMDIs were generated at known concentrations in anexposure chamber. Parallel sampling was carried out using two laboratorymethods and direct-reading instruments (DRIs) for evaluation purposes.Response curves for five commercial PMDIs were produced at chamberconcentrations ranging from 4 to 40 ppb (0.05 at 0.46mg/m) for the differentinstruments studied. For a given aerosol particle size distribution (MMAD3μm), the different PMDIs slightly affect the instruments’ responses. Finally, relative humidity (RH) above 60% was shown to have an effect on theresponses of most of the instruments studied. These results confirm that DRIscan be used for PMDI determinations with appropriate calibration (usingaccepted method); however, the user needs to know the limitations of theseinstruments.

Role of inhalation challenge testing in the diagnosis of isocyanate-induced asthma.

Results of isocyanate challenge tests performed on 63 workers referred with a diagnosis of probable isocyanate asthma between 1974 and 1988 were reviewed. Thirty (48 percent) had an acute episode of asthma with a greater than 20 percent decline in FEV1 following subirritant exposure to isocyanates. No difference in the frequency or type of respiratory complaints between isocyanate reactors and ...

Methyl isocyanate and carcinogenesis: bridgeable gaps in scientific knowledge.

Methyl isocyanate may have a role in cancer etiology, although the link is unclear. There is evidence in the literature that it can induce cancer in animals but the carcinogenic potency is weak. Pheochromocytoma of adrenal medulla and acinar cell tumors of pancreas have been observed in methyl isocyanate exposed animals. Conversely, emerging data from population-based epidemiological studies ar...

Skin Exposure to Isocyanates: Reasons for Concern

OBJECTIVE Isocyanates (di- and poly-), important chemicals used worldwide to produce polyurethane products, are a leading cause of occupational asthma. Respiratory exposures have been reduced through improved hygiene controls and the use of less-volatile isocyanates. Yet isocyanate asthma continues to occur, not uncommonly in settings with minimal inhalation exposure but opportunity for skin ex...

Imbalance of mitochondrial-nuclear cross talk in isocyanate mediated pulmonary endothelial cell dysfunction☆

Mechanistic investigations coupled with epidemiology, case-control, cohort and observational studies have increasingly linked isocyanate exposure (both chronic and acute) with pulmonary morbidity and mortality. Though ascribed for impairment in endothelial cell function, molecular mechanisms of these significant adverse pulmonary outcomes remains poorly understood. As preliminary studies conduc...

Occupational hypersensitivity pneumonitis due to isocyanates: mechanisms of action and case reports in Japan.

Isocyanates are very useful chemicals, and these are important for our daily life. Various products, especially urethane resin, are made from these chemicals. There is no substitute for isocyanates at the present. Isocyanates are patent agents to provoke immunological responses. This article deals with the case reports of hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) induced by isocyanates in Japan. It is ...
